Beginning Blacksmithing

This six-week course introduces the old world craft of blacksmithing* Here, the student learns the fundamentals of the trade: Shaping, forming, tapering, flattening, twisting and punching. Students will put these basics into practice by first hammering a traditional wall hook and then creating another small item of their choice (i.e. fire poker, knife). This class is the perfect introduction for those with an interest in moving metal or those who have merely dabbled in the past.

$200 All materials included; Max 6 Students

*This class is a prerequisite for Blacksmithing 102. Must be 15 years or older


Blacksmithing 102

Blacksmithing 102 gives the student the opportunity to take their newfound skills to a higher level by designing their own projects in the direction of their interest: ie tools, hardware, garden implements, knives, etc. Metals with different properties will be introduced, and their use in different applications explored. Hardening and tempering will be explored and applied where applicable.

$200 All materials included; Max 6 Students

Continued Blacksmithing

Continue exploring your own projects in this 6-week class with the assistance of an instructor. Perfect for students who have taken BS101 and 102 but would like further direction.

$200 All materials included; Max 6 Students

Knife Building

This weekly class spotlights the craft of knife building. The student will learn the craftsmanship necessary to create a custom knife. A variety of fixed and full tang knife blanks and folding knife kits from renowned bladesmiths will be available for purchase* (Knife Kits Range $25-$200). After selecting a blade, students will learn file-work, traditional ping pinning method, and to make and affix handles. Wood for handles is provided, but a variety of handle materials are available in-shop for an additional cost (i.e. bone, antler) or the student may bring their own.

$125 plus cost of materials; Max 4 Students

*No blacksmithing is involved in this class.


Beginning Woodworking

This class will cover the tools and techniques used in the construction of slab wood furniture. Basic woodworking skills, including hand planing through mortise & tenon joinery, will be taught. Students will also become familiar with the use of the band saw, miter saw, drill press and other basic power tools. Slab wood and tree limbs will be supplied. Students will leave this class with either a three-legged stool, a four-legged table, or a bench.

$150 All materials included; Max 5 Students

Bladesmithing

This is a seven week course where students will design, hammer, and handle their own knives. Expect to finish with 1-3 knives. Previous Blacksmithing experience required.

$250 All materials included; Max 6 Students
